Dantenova: Music from the Divine Comedy
In 1321, the great poet Dante Alighieri died. At the exact same time, Philippe de Vitry and Johannes de Muris published their treatises on music. Their proclamations about an ars nova heralded the start of a remarkable century of musical creativity. This program—featuring the remarkable medieval ensemble La Fonte Musica in their American debut—showcases the color, fantasy, and imagination of the ars nova. Trace Dante’s footsteps in The Divine Comedy through music: join us for the lamentations of Hell, the scared and courtly love of Purgatory, and the angelic strains of Heaven.
