Leatherman Historical Woodwinds

As a physicist by training, an engineer by profession and a musician and woodworker in his spare time, Gerry Leatherman finds building instruments to be both challenging and rewarding. With persistent attention to detail and careful step-by-step improvements, he creates instruments that are truly a joy to play.

Leatherman recorders are all based on historical baroque and renaissance designs, from measurements and drawings of surviving instruments. Inspired by, and having studied the detailed diagrams by recorder makers such as Fred Morgan, Bob Marvin and others, all of Gerry’s instruments are made with curved windways, undercut holes, and are treated with linseed oil. These instruments are based on historic models but have small adaptations for tuning and modern pitch.

Gerry’s philosophy is that an instrument should allow the player to connect to his- or herself at a deep level, whether played individually or with others. All aspects of an instrument are therefore important: the outward appearance, the touch and feel, and the tone.

As a relative newcomer to the field of instrument building, Gerry prefers that his customers consult with him in person, testing out and playing his instruments before considering a purchase. For that reason, he prefers to sell locally (in the Portland, OR area) or to players he can meet in person at festivals or workshops. However, he is willing to consider remote purchases if you get in touch with him.
