Sean Smith and Leslie Ifshin, lutes
The top hits of the day, as covered by the many European lutebooks and manuscripts of the latter half of the 16th century. Composers include Janequin, Crequillon, deRore, and Lasso, among others. Though mostly unplayed today, the lute repertory has hundreds of delightfully thought-out chanson and madrigal works – yes, the dances are fun, and the fantasies and ricercars are sublime, but it was in the tradition of song “intabulations” where the lute found its largest audience and greatest fame. We look forward especially to presenting that rara avis, Janequin’s Les Chants des Oiseaux!
