Viola d’Amore by Devin Hough (2020)
Devin Hough began his training as a violin maker in 1970 at age 12 with his grandfather, Paul Schaupp, and worked with him for seven summers in Inglewood, CA. In 1980, he moved to Davis (CA) and started working for Albert C. Muller in Sacramento in 1985. In Muller’s shop, Devin refined his violin making skills and learned to do stringed instrument repair and restoration, working with Muller until 1991.
In his own shop now for many years, he produces fine handmade violins, violas, and cellos in both modern and baroque forms, made to order. Hough focuses on subtle and elegant design work, be it ornate carving or just deftly applied glue and varnish. He now also duplicates old designs for instrumentalists looking to replicate the Baroque sound, but unable to afford antique instruments.
He specializes in instruments of the baroque, renaissance, and medieval periods, the violin family, violas da gamba, violas d’amore, and other period instruments made after historical models or to custom specification.
